Artist Statement

For more than a decade, my artistic journey has been a deep exploration of meditation in art. Utilizing the medium of oil painting, I have woven together the realms of mantras and mandalas, crafting visualizations intended for meditation. This artistic odyssey, rooted in a personal painting meditation practice, began to take shape during my time at IUPUI’s Herron School of Art and Design.

The spark of inspiration ignited when I had the privilege of witnessing Buddhist monks meticulously crafting a sand mandala on the university campus. Each day, I would quietly observe their skillful and tranquil creation of an intricate masterpiece. The profound serenity that emanated from the process left an indelible mark on me, sparking a quest to capture that tranquil essence within my own artistic endeavors.

In my pursuit of replicating that serene experience, I delved into the exploration of meditation through the medium of oil painting. Early on, I translated the concept of mandalas and engaged in listening to and meditating on mantras to create layered abstractions in my paintings. The symbology of lotuses also found its way into my work, oscillating between abstract mantras and conceptual pieces where lotuses became the primary symbol.

Through the act of painting mantras and mandalas, I have cultivated my own unique form of meditation. As my artistic journey unfolds, my aspiration is to continue evolving and progressing, moving toward a personal enlightenment that is deeply intertwined with each stroke of the brush.
